La Caldera del Gigante

Hello, how are you doing? We thought we would take you on a little virtual hike we went on in December, get ready for picture and video overload!

Let’s start this hike adventure

For this hike adventure we picked a beautiful and sunny day, packed our backpacks with some food, water, sunscreen, our trusty iPhones to document everything and hopped in the car. The little town of Algorfa is only 7 km away from Los Montesinos and our the delano montesinos, so it took us roughly 10 minutes to arrive at the trailhead of our chosen hike “La Caldera del Gigante” at the end of c/ Manuel de Falla in Montemar, Algorfa. Beware, as it isn’t a loop trail there aren’t really any parking spaces to speak of, so that might be a bit tricky.

We only did part of the hike and then turned around. We aren’t seasoned hikers in any way so 17 km seemed a bit ambitious to us, also we would’ve needed transport back to our car so we decided to hike to the highlights of the trail, eat the lunch we brought and turn back around.

La Caldera del Gigante.

So, the hike starts at the trailhead in Calle Manuel de Falla and goes down for a bit until you reach the little creek (as it was winter and there had been a severe inundation just weeks before, there actually was water) through mediterranean pine forests of the nature site “hoyo del serrano”. The whole hike has a canyon-y feel as it follows the water until you reach the highlight, which gave the hike it’s name, “caldera del gigante”. You’ll see watercarved rockpools in a canyon setting, the perfect picture and lunchspot to rest a bit.

Follow the trail until you reach a more sandy area, which seems to be a riverbed. We found a swing, mounted on a pine tree, another perfect picturespot which also marked the end of our trail as we turned around here.

On your way back you’ll also have some awesome views over the surrounding orangegroves.

We found the trail to be very peaceful and the perfect post-christmas workout at the time. Also for this time of the year and the temperature, which was around 19°C it was perfectly suited.

Good to know

  • Time: we needed about 3 hours for our shortened tour

  • Level: the level of the hike is labeled “high”

  • Props: water, sunscreen, sturdy shoes, optional: picnic lunch

Additional info for hikers

Please don’t leave the official trail as to not disturb the flora and fauna, do not smoke, the pine forrest tends to be very dry and catches fire easily!
